Exploring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island with my bestie! The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France. A French engineer designed the statue; American engineers designed the pedestal. Funding for the pedestal was the result of a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised over $300,000. The citizens of New York thought all Americans should contribute to the funding, and non-New Yorkers thought New York should pay for it. Rich people thought it was too much of a populist symbol and didn’t want to support it. To white Americans, it meant freedom from the British colonial rule. To black Americans, it meant freedom from slavery. To immigrants, it was a symbol of welcome, representing the freedom of opportunity and the hope for a better future. #ladyliberty #statueofliberty #visitNYC #NewYorkHarbor
