The last time I was in Berlin, a friend from Connecticut took me to a proper New York style bagel place. My life was changed.

I’m from the Pacific Northwest and I’d only had fluffy, bready bagels from the supermarket that were kind of dry and chewy. ​I didn’t get what all the hype with bagels was about.

This bagel was different. Boiled, baked and lightly toasted, this bagel was just a bit crunchy on the outside, and warm, soft and chewy on the inside. It was laden with a thick smear of cream cheese and avocado slices and tomato, and a sprinkle of fresh cracked black pepper. Now that I have had a good bagel, I will never insult bagel-lovers again.
